Mini Pocket Rockets

So Paul is back from Afghanistan and was visiting the weekend before last. I come over to his place and he’s on the web checking out miniature motorcycles. I’m just thinking to myself, “wtf Paul?” Well somehow his search for trucks turned into a search for mini motorcycles, but he came to a site called minipocketrockets.com where they were selling some of these things for under $200. Intrigued I went on you tube and checked search for some pocket bike videos and found a bunch. Apparently this thing is pretty big in China as there were several videos feature championship races or something.

After watching a bunch of videos I got to thinking shit $200. Is that really it? I gave the place a call to ask a few questions about the bike and after some rounds of “I’ll get one if you get one” back and forth withPaul two bikes were ordered for $237.12 shipped each. It’s a tiny motorcycle that comes in a cardboard box! It’s shipped with standard FedEx shipping!

So a week later on Friday the bike arrives in all it’s cardboard box glory. When I pulled it out of the box I have to say I was impressed. The quality is remarkably good for such a low price. The welds looked good, the plastics were nice, and the engine fired right up in no time. A few hours later the fun began. I took my bike over to Paul’s and it was race time!

The first thing I noticed when I started riding, it’s kind of scary! You sit in a really weird position and until you get some speed it isn’t very stable. After you do get some speed it’s kinda scary trying to steer for fear of hitting the ground during the lean. The bike is after all only about 16 inches tall. The next thing I noticed though was how remarkably fast these things are. The site said they do 40 m.p.h. I haven’t been able to confirm that, but they definitely go about as fast as you would want to go sitting that close to the ground. They also accelerated quicker than I expected. With only a 47cc engine I didn’t expect much in the way of power so I was happy to see it was pretty decent.

So for the racing. We drove by this one guy’s house where he was working on his motocross bike. He see’s us drive by and later comes out on a kids 50cc dirt bike. I joke with him, “you wanna race?” and he’s just like sure. We all get lined up and go. He had us on acceleration and pulled away early on, but the mini pocket rockets had higher top end speed so I was able to pull up and past him before we hit the finish line. I wish someone had a video camera because I has to have looked hilarious as grown men raced on tiny motorcycles!

I put up some photos of my bike on my site. Check them out here.

Operation: Safari Strike III

This past weekend my bro, my buddy and myself attended Operation: Safari Strike III over at Pinnacle Woods Paintball. The event was put on Tactical Airsoft Cleveland, certainly the most dedicated airsoft team in Ohio, and sponsored by many different airsoft retailers and manufacturers. Overall I have to say it was a pretty great event. I had played in a couple of Pinnacle’s big paintball games before and never really enjoyed them as much as their standard open games, so I was a little skeptical on how good this event would be considering that the field layout would be extremely similar to a Pinnacle big game. I was pleasantly surprised that this was not an issue. The organization in airsoft made the problems I found with Pinnacle’s big games non-existent. Radio communication being aloud for one is big help so you can find your squad mates when you get separated and having clear cut objectives makes it a lot better than just wondering around the field looking for people to shoot at; people who even if you do hit won’t call out because there is no ref around to witness them cheating (paintball players suck). I definitely enjoyed this event.

On to the event itself… The op was split into two parts; an A.M. Mission and a P.M. mission three and a half hours each. After playing a a couple John Lu events I was use to 2.5-3 hours for first mission, 1.5-2 for then next then a third at 1-1.5 hours long. These two long missions just seemed like forever. I don’t mean that in a bad way though. It was cool being able to really get a lot of time to complete your objectives, because after all, when you’re facing an equally sized and skilled opposing force these things are going to take time. The thing is, these long missions, combined with the 90+ degree weather and the humidity in the woods really takes it’s toll on a person. Over the course of the op the game was paused twice so the EMT’s standing by could pull out and treat people with heat stroke. Guess they didn’t drink enough water.

In the op my buddy, bro and myself were sort of on our own squad. Shortly after we signed up for the even we were put on the HQ staff which basically meant we stuck with the XO and CO. The day beforeMG36 the op I see we were switched to the Special Forces squad. Not only that, but I was no long in the SAW(squad automatic weapon) gunner position whichI was kinda ticked about because I had just gotten my MG36 together and now I wouldn’t be able to use it. Well we get there and the CO tells us were back on HQ staff. Great considering we stayed up late the night before memorizing our objectives for special forces. The good part about this though was that I was able to use my MG36 so overall I was pretty happy. As we got into the game suddenly my CO says, “ohh, you’re our medic.” Now I was a SAW gunner medic… unconventional, but ohh well.

Due to my medic role I did less fighting then I would have, but I still did my fair share, laying down the cover fire when needed and popping in a few kills every now and then. I excelled in my medic role however. There actually was times where I felt like I was playing Battlefield 2 and my teammate would get killed, I’d revive him, he’d get killed again immediately again and the cycle would repeat. In the P.M. mission I ended up with 32 revives for a total of about 45 for the op. A ridiculous amount by all accounts. At the end of the op I had about 7 kills was shot 3 times but revived every time so 0 deaths. Combine that with my medic score, a few resupply points I got for resupplying my bro and buddy, a building capture and some assists, and returning a couple IED’s back to HQ and if this was Battlefield 2 I would probably have gotten a Gold Star! šŸ˜›

The last thing I gotta say about the op was man did they have a lot of swag to give away! At check-in everyone received a bag full of prizes and a raffle ticket. At the raffle they had a ton of stuff. I was fortunate enough to win a $200 gift certificate to an airsoft retailer so I more than made up for my admission. My bro and buddy also won the raffle. My bro won a new tactical cross draw vest and my buddy won a remote control tank that shoots airsoft bb’s. An odd prize, but definitely the envy of the crowd!

It was a great event and I’m definitely going to do it again next year!

I Bought a New Car!

My Brand New 2007 Solstice GXP
Yes it’s true; I went and bought a new car! I picked up a brand new 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP and I have to say, this thing is sweet! I took it off the lot with a grand total of 20 miles on it, most of which were from the test drive I had done a few days earlier. Essentially I’m the only person to ever drive it! It has a turbo charged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine putting out 260 hp in an under 3000 pound package so overall it’s pretty fast. It also handles great! It sits completely flat around corners at speeds I would never dare to take my Grand Am around at! Sure it’s not up there with your Porches and Ferraris or some of the higher end BMWs, but it also cost less than half as much. Even though, it’s definitely a blast to drive!

I got the car almost fully loaded with options except for OnStar and an automatic transmission, neither of which did I want. Other than those two it has just about everything including, 6-disc in dash MP3 CD player with auxiliary input jack for MP3 players, XM radio, 7 speaker sound system with sub woofer, A/C, leather seats/wheel/shift knob, chrome exhaust tips, rear spoiler, 18ā€ chromed aluminum rims, sport tires and the ever important GXP logo floor mats. The GXP model also includes a lot of performance upgrades over the standard model, but I’m not going to list them here as you can find all the details on Pontiac’s website.

For the first 3 months I get the XM free before I have to start paying for it so I’ve been listening to that a lot and so far it seems pretty good, but I’m no sold yet. Still have 3 months to decide so no rush. I’m lovin’ the MP3 CD player as it’s cutting way down on the number of discs I have to keep with me in order to have some variety. The MP3 player jack is also great as it eliminates the need for CD’s altogether however I still need to find a good place with easy access to keep the player while driving. There’s no space for it under the stereo because the shifter is there and the cup holders are the pop out type so the player just falls right through them. The passenger seat works fine when I don’t’ have a passenger, but with one… well not so much. I’m not really too concerned about it right now though as I’ve been using the XM and MP3 CD player mostly as it’s way more convenient to use on the drives to work and back. I’d probably only use my MP3 player for extended trips.

So is this car practical? No not really. Do I care? No not really. Actually, for the task of driving to work and back I can’t really say it’s impractical. I mean it gets me and my one bag there and back and with 22 city and 31 highway mpg so in that sense it’s a lot more practical than me driving say a Suburban where my mileage would be half that. Heck, my Grand Am doesn’t even get that good of mileage and that’s what I would be driving if I didn’t have this car. Really the only way it wouldn’t be practical is if I was taking an extended trip or needed go shopping for a lot of stuff or some larger item. That’s why I kept my old car anyway. That and the fact that I don’t plan to drive this thing in the winter at all.

Now I was considering leasing a BMW 335i before I bought this car. If I had done that, I would have gotten rid of my old car and would drive the BMW year round. I decided not to pretty much when I saw a Solstice sitting in a parking lot one day. I had always liked the car since I saw it premiere at the Detroit auto show and I just had to stop and admire it. I remembered back when I saw it at Detroit and said to myself I have to get me one of those! I’m glad I did. The car really stands out in the crowd way more than the BMW would have, especially in this town. The biggest problem with this car though; it has the unfortunate side effect of attracting a lot of unwanted attention from the cops and people wanting to race, but I guess I knew that would happen. The chicks love it so I guess it all balances out!

Anyway, you can check more photo’s of it in my photo gallery.

Punkbuster and Battlefield 2142

So I went to play some 2142 today.Ā  Finally got enough hours to get Veteran Assault so I figure I’ll jump in a game a Cerber Landing and BAM 15 minutes later have the badge.Ā  Got into the game with the round almost over.Ā  Popped in 8 kills with no deaths then round end.Ā  Looked at my round stats and my accuracy for the Assault Rifle is 3400%.Ā  OK, weird I thought but whatever.Ā  Next round startsĀ and suddenly punkbuster is bitching at me about missing packets and then I get kicked.Ā  Ā So I think, “Ok, screwy server then.”Ā  I move on.Ā  Next sever immediately I get the punkbuster crap.Ā  “Maybe my dsl is being screwy,” I think so I restart my modem and router.Ā  Back in the game get into a round near the end and manage to finish the round.Ā  Next round… kicked again by punkbuster!

And this point I shout out a loud “WTF?!!!”

I check EA’s Battlefield site.Ā  No news about it.Ā  I talk to Your Mom (yes your’s) and he doesn’t seem to be having a problem.Ā  finally I make it to punkbusters site and I see they released a new punkbuster update TODAY.Ā  I also see that punkbuster should update itself automatically.Ā  Well guess what?Ā  It isn’t working!Ā  I download their updater utility and run it.Ā  It gets the update and installs it.Ā  Great!Ā  Maybe now it will work.Ā  Join a game… same problem!

At this point I’m extra pissed and just decide to re-install the whole damn game.Ā  (Yeah I wanted the Veteran Assault pretty bad)

Well a good half hour to an hour later It’s re-installed and patched.Ā  Thankfully I remembered to save my controls.con file before doing it to save me some hassle, however a good 5-6 minutes of shader optimization quickly takes away that little victory.

So back in the game, but wait!Ā  30 seconds later it’s kick Spender time again for missing punkbuster packets!Ā  “Son of a Bitch!!!!”

So I retry the punkbuster update tool and restart my computer to find a new extra process running in the background.Ā  One Mr. “PnkBstrA.exe”.Ā  Note this was not running after I applied the update, but before I restarted.Ā  Turns out that the new version of punkbuster requires this process running in the background to work.Ā  Gay!

So I want to thank the Assholes at punkbuster for releasing a poorly executed patch to a system that does jack shit and wasting 3 hours of my time so I could get the 15 minutes of play time needed to get my damn badge.Ā  I also want to thank them for adding ANOTHER background process to my system.Ā  I just can’t get enough of those!Ā  Thanks a lot douche bags!
